I love folk music. I like all types of different music including classical but I listen to folk music more than anything else. I love the traditional instruments and even though many songs are love songs, I love best those that are about the sea. Songs of homesickness, sad songs, songs about alienation. Songs about working people and story songs, and Celtic music has these themes and a deep and poetical appreciation of nature, describing the streams and the hills and the flowers.
Probably one of my most favourite bands is Andy Stewart and Silly Wizard, but the Irish bands have their own magic and Clannad and many of the more modern artists all have their appeal.
I love Kate Bush and Sting because they were fantastic artists who made a wide range of different types of music, but it is the Celtic feel of some of their songs that made me a raving fan. Stings "Soul Cages" where he sings of his father and the shipyards, Kate Bush's Running up that Hill album - just awesome.
Both my grandfathers were Scottish and my great grandmother was Irish. One grandfather was a singer and each time I listen to the Scottish accent singing I am 4 years old again listening to my grandpa singing softly to himself as he's doing the dishes or stacking the coal on the fire.
